Standards & Benchmarks Trans fatty acids amount on labels made mandatory G.K. Nair
Kochi , Nov. 10 THE US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has made labelling of amount of trans fatty acids present in conventional foods, including dietary supplements, mandatory. FDA, which had amended its regulation on nutrition labelling for this purpose, has ruled that the amount of trans fatty acids should be written as separate lime immediately under the line for the declaration for saturated fatty acids, according to information available here. In addition, it is withdrawing those sections of the proposed rule pertaining to the definition of nutrient content claims for "free and for "reduced" levels of trans fatty acids, and limits on the amount of trans fatty acids, wherever saturated fatty acid limits are placed on nutrient content claims, health claims, and disclosure and disqualifying levels. Further, the FDA is also withdrawing the proposed requirement to include a footnote stating- "intake of trans fat should be as low as possible".
