Kochi , Nov 10

THE Kerala Tourism Department will initiate projects involving Rs 15 crore for Ernakulam District this year as part of tourism development activities, the State Tourism Minister, Prof K.V. Thomas, has said.

The projects included a new complex at the existing boat jetty at a cost of Rs 180 lakh, travellers facilitation centre at Fort Kochi at an investment of Rs 200 lakh and food courts at a cost of Rs 34 lakh etc, Prof Thomas said at a press conference here.

Projects worth Rs 20 crore were in various stages of completion in the district and were expected to be completed next year, he added.

The Minister said that the department had taken up the development of major road in each of 5 municipal corporations in the State. While Rs 5 crore each would be spent in Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, the Government had earmarked Rs 3 crore each for roads in Thrissur and Kollam.

Referring to the problems faced by Kochi due to digging of roads to lay cables KSEB, BSNL etc, the Minister said that underground service ducts would be constructed beneath model roads to find a permanent solution for this. A four feet wide duct would be built in reinforced concrete and would have trays at different levels carrying different cables including water supply. This design has been formulated after lots of research and discussions held with experts.

With Kochi being Kerala's gateway where traders from all over the world including Portuguese, Dutch and English came, it was proposed that roads stretching from Broadway to Shiva Temple would be designed and developed in architectural styles of various cultures.

It is also proposed to develop Shanmugham Road starting from High Court Junction continuing with Park Avenue up to Shiva Temple as Model road in Kochi. The total length of the road is two km. The first phase of the road will comprise of 849.74 mt from High Court Junction to Guest House.

Regarding the construction of a new boat jetty, he said that the boat jetties were quite inadequate for a city such as Kochi where water transport was an important mode of travel. Understanding this infrastructure inadequacy, the department had put forward a proposal to totally reconstruct the present boat jetty near Subhash Park. The present boat jetty had the problems of inadequate waiting space, dilapidated structure, lack of parking space etc.
