15 killed as boat capsizes in Godavari

Our Bureau

RAJAHMUNDRY: Fifteen farm workers drowned in the Godavari on Monday morning when the boat in which they were travelling capsized in the river.

According to district officials, 40 workers were travelling in the boat to Durgamma Lanka (an islet in the river) when the accident occurred in the vicinity of Ramachandrapuram village in Sitanagaram mandal near here. Twenty-five swam to safety. All the bodies were recovered.

Vegetables, tobacco and banana are extensively grown in the fertile Godavari islets (known as lankas in Telugu) and the workers were going to Durgamma Lanka to work in the fields there.

Local people complain that the boats taking the workers to the fields in the islets are usually overcrowded and ill-maintained.
