Policy to protect freshwater sought

Mangalore , Nov. 10

SPEAKERS at the inauguration of the international workshop on "Water safety and water microbiology" here today highlighted the need for a policy to protect available freshwater and expressed concern over pollution of freshwater sources.

The Higher Education Minister, Dr G. Parameshwar, who inaugurated the workshop organised by the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, and the UNESCO Microbial Resource Centre (MIRCEN) for Marine Biotechnology, Mangalore, stressed the need for the formulation of a national policy to protect available freshwater and its usage, and called upon delegates to put forth their views to the Government in this regard.

Though the target of the Karnataka Government is to provide 50 litres of water a day per person, in some villages in northern Karnataka only 10 litres of water is available

. "In such a situation we need to protect freshwater to make it available for the future generation," he said.

Stating that rejuvenation of water table has not reached the expected level, the Minister said people have been digging borewells to a depth of 700 ft. In some areas, the fluoride content was high at that level.

The Minister said the research activities of the agricultural universities have helped the country in exporting foodgrains, rice and sugar.

The country has the potential to become a major fisheries exporter, he added.

In her address, Dr Lucy Hoareau of UNESCO, said the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2003 as the international year of freshwater in recognition of the importance of water resources for the future of the planet.

Dr Hoareau highlighted the use of biotechnology in providing good quality freshwater. MIRCEN was cooperating with UNESCO in conducting advanced research in marine biotechnology, she added.
