MICROSOFT India Development Centre (MIDC), the global product development unit based in Hyderabad and part of Microsoft Corporation Inc, has embarked on a rapid expansion cum recruitment drive that will see its headcount double here.

The Managing Director of MIDC, Mr Srini Koppolu, told Business Line that the drive to align its product development teams had been completed and new development teams for Tablet PC, Windows System Resource Manager, Enterprise Storage and Windows Server technologies group, constituted. After the visit of Chairman of Microsoft Corporation, Mr Bill Gates, wherein it had planned to invest in the Indian centre, MIDC has begun work on the $30 million technology campus in a 42- acre site, located adjacent the Indian School of Business. This is expected to be completed by the end of 2004.

The recently-formed Windows Server technologies group is working on developing technologies for the next version of Windows Server operating system. This centre continues to expand by forming new technology and product groups. This is being developed as the largest centre outside Redmond and will have a headcount of about 500, up from 250 now.

"Within a very short span, we have done some pioneering technology and product development work. Of specific focus has been the release of Microsoft Outlook 2002 Connector, a software add-in that enables users of the IBM Lotus Domino Release 5 messaging server to use Outlook 2002 messaging and collaboration client as an e-mail client application. We are working on version upgrades for other products as well," he added.

This centre has released several products in the four years demonstrating its ability to conceptualise and develop products for the international markets, covering the entire span of product development and testing areas. The teams at MIDC have filed 12 patents and several more patents are to be filed this year.
