Railways to develop anti-rust rails

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 13

THE Railways have launched a project to develop corrosion proof rails to suit extremes of weather and human habitation close to tracks.

The move is aimed at preventing accidents arising out of track defects, an official release said here on Thursday.

"Corrosion poses a serious problem in approaches of major stations, coastal areas and in tracks passing through inhabited areas. Encroachments are rampant in all major towns and the tracks become open toilets, leading to increased corrosion," a senior Railway official said.

As part of the efforts to keep tracks clean, especially near stations, the Railways have also taken up modification in toilets to ensure that the discharge does not fall on rail foot area and corrode the rails and fastenings.

The new toilets, that would be progressively introduced on all trains, also have a controlled discharge system that are designed to release at speeds of over 40 km per hour.

The move would help keep areas around stations clean.
