Politics TDP votes for snap poll Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Nov. 13 THE Telugu Desam Politburo on Thursday approved a resolution for dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly and decided to seek a fresh mandate of the people. This could mean a snap poll in the first quarter of 2004, at least six months ahead of its full term that ends in October 2004. Later, the resolution, which was discussed at the TDP broad-based general body Mini-Mahanadu, attended by about 7,500 delegates, was endorsed overwhelmingly and accepted by the members. The move to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly was being speculated over the last month or so, particularly after the assassination bid on TDP President and State Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, by Naxalites early last month at Tirumala. From all indications, it is likely that the State Cabinet meeting, which is slated for later this week, possibly the 15th , could recommend to the State Governor, Mr S.S. Barnala, to dissolve the House. During the broad-based Mini-Mahanadu, three resolutions were passed. While the first one relates to condemning the attack of Naxalites on the TDP supremo, the other is a political resolution; the third one relates to authorising the party President, Mr Naidu, to take a decision on the dissolution of the House. During his address to party members, Mr Naidu re-iterated the progress made by the State Government over the last seven years. He also expressed how its main political rival in the State, Congress, Naxalites and Telangana separatists were creating hurdles in the overall progress of the State. Mr Naidu is considering the dissolution of the House since he is confronted with the potential of facing simultaneous polls to the Lok Sabha and the State Assembly, and having to fight the anti-incumbency factor.
