Steel Industry & Economy - Steel Govt may call steel meet to address woes Ambarish Mukherjee
New Delhi , Nov. 13 IN a bid to bridge the conflict of interests between the primary and secondary steel producers, the Ministry of Steel is likely to call a meeting of the primary producers next week to discuss the issue of price stability and lowering of import duty on steel. The move follows a high-level meeting of secretaries earlier this week in which it was decided that no "hurried decision" would be taken with regard to scaling down the import duty on steel. Instead, the Government will "wait and watch" for a month and if market conditions fail to improve, then intervention in the form of import duty reduction may be taken up only in December. As an initial step in that direction, the primary steel makers are being invited by the Government to present their views. Meanwhile, hectic lobbying is on by cold rollers to convince the Government about the necessity to cut import duties. On the contrary, the primary producers, who make hot rolled steel, are unable to put up a uniform voice because of conflicting corporate group interests.
