Standards & Benchmarks Workshop on software system testing Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 14 THE IEEE Computer Society and IEEE GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) are jointly organising a workshop on "Software System Testing: A Statistical Approach" on November 22. An IEEE representative said here that the speakers would be Ms Deepa Thampy and Mr Unni Sankar, both from Network Systems and Technologies (NeST), Thiruvana- nthapuram. The venue would be the Amphitheatre, ER&DCI, Thiruvananthapuram. The duo are co-authors of "Applying Taguchi Methods in Software Product Engineering", adjudged among the best three papers in SEPG 2002 (Software Engineering Process Group), Bangalore. The software industry of today relies heavily on the final system testing to ensure the quality of its deliverables. However, the methods adopted for this crucial phase depend almost entirely on the ingenuity of the tester, rather than on any sound engineering principle. The ad hoc measures often have an adverse effect on product quality, team productivity and cycle time. "At one extreme, we have an arbitrary selection of test cases, what with the testers under an illusion of completeness. At the other, we have an exhaustive set of combinations, consuming so much effort and cost that they can be regarded as prohibitively expensive without proportionate returns", the IEEE representative said.
