Chennai , Nov. 14

NINE Indian companies are among 138 worldwide, named as awardees for various categories of `TPM Excellence awards', given by the Japanese Institute of Plant Maintenance.

The award will be given at a function in Japan on December 9.

TPM, or Total Plant Maintenance, is a productivity enhancement tool, which treats each machine as a profit centre. Each worker or a group of workers `own' a machine and are responsible for its maintenance. The objective is to achieve `zero accidents, zero defects and zero failures'.

Only one company — Orient Cement — has been named the recipient of the `Award for Excellence in consistent TPM Commitment'. Brakes India , Mahindra & Mahindra, TVS Srichakra, Hindustan Lever, Galaxy Surfactants and Hindustan Motors will receive the `Award for TPM Excellence - First category'. Hi-Tech Carbon and TTK-LIG are to get the `Award for TPM Excellence - Second category'.
