How the first cargo shipment took off

Our Bureau

NOVEMBER 7 is observed as the Air Cargo Day. On that day, 93 years ago, a load of silk was carried by air, marking the world's first air cargo shipment. It all started in 1910 — exactly seven years after the Wright Brother's first flight at Kitty Hawk — when Mr Max Morehouse, an Ohio businessman, initiated the first air shipment of two packages of silk.

When the plane landed at Columbus, Ohio, with a load of 200 pound shipment from Dayton, the 3000-strong crowd, who were present at Columbus, were agog. One package was sent to Mr Morehouse's store by car. The silk in the other package was cut into small pieces, glued to cards and sold to the crowd. The pilot was a young man, Philip Parmalee and the plane a Wright Model B aircraft. Reports have it that Orville Wright was present when the plane took off from Dayton.
