CII to hold career fair in Madurai

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Nov. 16

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (southern region) will hold a `Career Fair' in the city during the second week of December.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr K.K.M. Kutty, Chairman, CII (SR), said that the CII was committed to drawing attention to Madurai as a destination for investments as part of its efforts to bring about development in the southern districts.

Last year, the focus was on tourism. This has helped to activate the travel club in the city. Guided tours have picked up. This year, it has been decided to hold a `Career Fair' in December to highlight the talent available in Madurai and the surrounding regions.

The presence of the corporate world in the city would provide the stimulus. While they would come to know firsthand the available talent pool, the students will get opportunities to know of job profiles required in the market.

The meet will also be helpful in facilitating industry-institute contact for the future, as educational institutions in the area would be exhibiting their strength and facilities on the occasion.

He said the panel formed by CII, for industrialisation of southern districts, has identified IT-enabled services as having very good scope since they are cost-effective.

CII would try to prevail upon major industries to establish their branch offices in Madurai. As to large-scale investments in the area, CII would work with the Tamil Nadu Government to divert investments in the State to Madurai.

There is a necessity to improve the infrastructure, especially air travel, he emphasised. Mr Kutty felt that rubber as another emerging sector in Madurai with good scope to expand.

The role of CII could only be a catalyst and the Government must come forward to play a major role, he stressed. CII has initiated a study on the industrial scenario at Sivakasi, especially the fireworks industries, to promote `cluster approach' to enable them to sustain their competitive edge in the global arena, he added.

Referring to the theme of CII, "THIS" is Competitiveness, for the year 2003-04, Mr Kutty said the objective is to leverage the cutting edge technologies in manufacturing and IT industries, nurture the human resource potential and education, develop world-class infrastructure and develop a vibrant small and medium enterprises sector.

The action programme towards achieving the objective would involve holding awareness sessions, training programmes, mission on competitiveness, holding mega events etc.

CII has already planned to hold `FoodPro 2003' during the third week of December at Chennai, `Agrimeet 2004' during the second week of February at Tiruchi and `Fabcon 2004' during April, again at Tiruchi, he added.
