Software IT exports up 35% in first half, says ESC Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 17 EXPORT of electronic hardware and computer software from India in the first half of the current fiscal grew by 35 per cent in dollar terms to $6.5 billion over $4.82 billion in the same period last year, according to estimates by the Electronic and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). In rupee terms, exports surged by 31.06 per cent to Rs 30,623 crore during April-September from Rs 23,366 crore in the corresponding period last year, ESC officials said here at a press conference on Monday. "Going by the trend, we are confident that the export target set for 2003-04, at Rs 64,698 crore ($13.77 billion) is achievable," said the Executive Director of ESC, Mr D.K. Sareen. Computer software and services recorded a growth of 38 per cent in dollar terms in the period under review (34 per cent in rupee terms), while the electronic hardware sector grew by 13.29 per cent in dollar terms. The sector-wise export figures were not available. On the strengthening of rupee against the dollar, Mr Sareen said though it was difficult to ascertain its impact on the information technology exports, the current figures did indicate a sliding of export revenue in rupee terms. According to the Chairman of ESC, Mr P.K. Sandell, the organisation planned to set up incubation centres in major global destinations to help small and medium software enterprises scout the markets with the least cost by pooling their resources.
