Chennai , Nov. 18

RANE Brake Linings Ltd has received the Deming Prize, an award recognising excellence in the practice of `total quality management' (TQM). The prize is given by the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers.

Total quality management is a technique that addresses issues ranging from management of quality through the entire production process, starting from sourcing raw materials to finished goods.

Announcing this at a press conference, the Rane group's Chairman, Mr L. Lakshman, said that the other companies of the group were also trying to win the prize.

The Deming Prize strengthens the bio-data of a company and, therefore, helps get more business.

Mr Sundar Ram, President, Rane Brake Linings, said that the company might have to expand capacity soon, given the prospects for growth. The company's turnover increased from Rs 94.7 crore in 2000-01 to Rs 107.70 crore the next year and to Rs 122.50 crore last year.

He said that the company would prefer not to grow through acquisitions, although there were offers.
