Mangalore varsity to network colleges

MANGALORE University plans to network its various departments and constituent colleges.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof B. Hanumaiah, said the networking of colleges would improve the quality of work.

Computerisation of the examination section has been completed and this has reduced the chances of malpractices and errors in examination process. The university Web site has the database of all colleges, he said.

On developing infrastructure at the post-graduate centre in Madikeri , he said that 100-acre land has been identified at Chikka Alavara for the purpose. There is a proposal to set up a post-graduate centre at Udupi.

Keeping in view the trends in the job market, there are plans to start some job-oriented courses. Courses in biotechnology, tissue culture, journalism, and spoken English are likely to be included soon, he said.

The university will begin a few courses under the distance education scheme from the next academic year.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs 32 lakh to the Mass Communication and Journalism Department to develop an audio-visual laboratory.

To prepare SC/ST, backward class and minority students for IAS/IPS examination, a coaching centre was started with financial assistance from the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Prof Hanumaiah said efforts are on to introduce insurance scheme to students and provide them with all facilities for their overall development.

Based on the progress during the Ninth Plan period, the UGC team has released a sizeable amount for the Tenth Plan period, he said.

The Registrar of Mangalore University, Mr Sundar Naik, and the Deputy Registrar (Administration), Prof. Shivalingaiah, were also present at the press meet.
