Don't lower bar, Nasscom tells animation sector

Bangalore , Nov. 18

INDIAN animation industry has the potential to grow to a $1.5-billion one by 2005 from the present size of $1 billion. It can even command a great chunk of the global market, which is likely to touch $70 billion in another two years. All it needs to do is nurture talent and channelise it in the right direction.

This was the outcome of a seminar on `IT and Animation: Let's Talk', organised by e-Entertainment Alliance in Bangalore on Tuesday. e-Entertainment is a joint alliance of FICCI, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) and TiE. Giving a presentation on the animation industry and its potential, Mr Kiran Karnik, President, Nasscom, said with the right combination of IT and creative talent, India will succeed in the industry.

He also highlighted some of the obstacles facing the industry: lack of adequate training facilities, not enough expertise in writing scripts and storyboards and a small domestic market.

He warned the players against getting into a negative loop of lower costs, cheap labour and hiring low quality talent like the medical transcription industry did. "Instead, we should look up to the Indian IT services industry, which is the gold standard in the global market," he said.
