Rajkamal Academy to award Telugu films

RAJKAMAL Academy of Cinematic Excellence (RACE), which presents the prestigious V. Shantaram awards for Hindi films every year, has decided to expand and present similar awards in Telugu beginning this year.

Christened RACE Telugu Film Awards, the awards would be given in 21 categories, rewarding excellence both on screen and behind, according to Mr Rahul V. Shantaram, President of RACE and grandson of the legendary filmmaker Shantaram.

Addressing a news conference, he said the panel had received 45 nominations, which included Khadgam, Okkadu and Ounu Valliddaru Ishta Paddaru.

The board of governors of RACE comprises Adoor Gopalkrishnan, Bobby Bedi, D. Rama Naidu, Javed Akhtar, K.S.L. Swame (Ravee), Somitra Chatterjee and Valampuri Somanathan.

The Telugu chapter consists of thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao, D.V. Narsaraju, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and Edida Nageswara Rao. The presentation slated for December 14 would be made taking a cue from the gala event organised by the Academy of Motion Pictures every year that presents Oscars, Mr D. Rama Naidu, Governor of the RACE' Telugu chapter, said.
