Water AP, Maharashtra sign pact for Rs 276-cr Lendi project Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Nov. 18 THE Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra Governments on Tuesday entered into an agreement that will pave the way for execution of a Rs 276-crore inter-State Lendi medium irrigation project in Maharashtra, as a joint venture between the two riparian states. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, was present with a host of Cabinet colleagues and senior officials and the agreement was entered into by Chief Secretaries of both the States in the presence of caretaker Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu. Mr Shinde and Mr Naidu, later speaking to media persons, described the agreement as historic and wanted to expand such mutual co-operation between the States in other areas as well. Mr Naidu lauded his counterpart for the kind gesture in allowing Andhra Pradesh to share waters from this medium irrigation project, which was a matter of contention between the States for the last 30 years. Mr Naidu wanted the same spirit of co-operation be extended to other similar projects which are pending between the States. These include inter-State projects such as Icchampalli, Pranahitha and Penn Ganga. Mr Shinde offered to positively respond after holding parleys with his officials. This inter-State agreement will pave the way for construction of a dam about 30 km from Andhra Pradesh border and pave the way for impounding about 6.36 TMC of Lendi waters before the river joins Manjira, a tributary of the Godavari river. Water thus impounded would help irrigate large tracts across either side of the border and would be shared in the ratio of 62:38. Out of the Rs 276-crore project, Andhra Pradesh is expected to contribute Rs 117.86 crore. At the signing ceremony, Mr Naidu handed over a cheque of Rs 12.98 crore to Mr Shinde towards Andhra Pradesh's initial contribution for the project.
