Supply Chain Management Concor to set up CFS at Vizag rail station Ch. R.S. Sarma
Visakhapatnam , Nov. 19 THE old railway station of Visakhapatnam that is no longer in use has been allocated to the Container Corporation of India to set up a container freight station (CFS). Tenders have already been invited for the purpose. Official sources in Concor said the project, costing nearly Rs 10 crore, would be completed in 8-9 months. The old station, closed to passenger traffic long ago, last handled cargo in 1997; since then, it has been in disuse. The station is spread over 14 acres and the CFS will immediately require at least eight acres. With the setting up of a container cargo terminal at Visakhapatnam port earlier this year, Concor has expedited the process of setting up the third CFS in the State here; the other two are at Sanatnagar in Hyderabad and Guntur. Concor also plans to launch a scheduled service between Visakhapatnam and New Delhi to cater to both domestic and exim cargo. This is expected to help small-time traders and shipping lines handling low volumes of cargo bound for New Delhi and other upcountry destinations. An agreement has been signed between Concor and Visakha Container Terminal Pvt Ltd to lift container cargo by rail. The tariff for handling containers by rail directly between Visakha Container Terminal siding and various inland container depots has been notified through a release as well as direct communication to users. An advantage of the siding is that it is located within the premises of the terminal and runs parallel to the jetty, saving time and expense.
