IIM-K to offer Ph.D. programmes from next year

THE Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, plans to start Ph.D. programmes from next year. Both the faculty and infrastructure, such as buildings and library, are in place, Prof A.H. Kalro, Director of the Institute, said. The fellowships for the Ph.D programme, will be provided by the Union Government.

Among the various management institutes in the country, the IIM-K is a lean organisation. It has the lowest number of non-faculty staff among all the IIMs. As against the approximate 600 non-faculty staff of IIM-Calcutta, 500 of IIM-Ahmedabad and 450 of IIM-Bangalore, IIM-K has only 27 non-faculty members to run the huge campus, Prof Kalro said.

The Institute is also poised to come out with the first e-journal on management in the country along with the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS). There are 331 management schools under AIMS currently. IIM-K will incubate the online magazine for the first three years and simultaneously hard copies of the journal would be published by Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India, Hyderabad.

Already, close to 80 per cent of the Institute's recurring expenditure is being mobilised in-house, from projects undertaken for the Union and State Governments, funding agencies abroad and projects undertaken for various corporate bodies, Prof Kalro said.

With the buildings and other infrastructure having been set up to a great degree, funds allocation from the Government of India in the Plan mode is soon expected to dry up. The Institute expects to meet all its recurring expenditure from internal resource mobilisation shortly.

IIM K was the leader in launching an e-learning programme in the country. It started a one-year Post Graduate certificate e-learning programme in management, for which it has enrolled 208 students in the current batch.

The students who are graduates and who have also worked at an executive level in corporate companies are short-listed after an entrance examination.

The Institution has one of the best libraries in management in the country, with on-line access to some of the most prominent libraries in the world, especially among the known universities in the US.
