Chennai , Nov. 19

THE police department in Tamil Nadu is to have a new headquarters. The State Government on Wednesday decided to construct a new complex to house all the police departments, including the office of the Director General of Police (DGP), at a cost of Rs 30 crore.

According to an official release, the new headquarters will come up on 24 acres of land at Taramani and will be spread over three-lakh sq.ft. The Government feels that it is better to have all the police departments in the same place. With the new Secretariat to come up in Kotturpuram, the Government wants to have the police headquarters in the vicinity of the Secretariat.

At present, the DGP office is located in a heritage building along the Marina. This building will be converted into a police museum and tourist spot.

Earlier, the previous AIADMK Government, between 1991 and 1996, planned to pull down the police headquarters building and construct a multi-storey structure, a move that met with opposition from environmentalists and conservationists.

Dharmapuri bifurcation: Dharmapuri district is to be bifurcated and a new district with headquarters at Krishnagiri to be formed.

According to an official release, the newly formed Krishnagiri district will comprise Krishnagiri, Uthangarai, Pochampalli, Hosur and Denkanikota revenue divisions.

After the bifurcation, Dharmapuri district will have the revenue divisions of Dharmapuri, Pennagaram, Palacode, Harur and Pappireddipatti.
