Telecom cos asked to provide map of network

The Government has laid down the procedures for cable laying and for other agencies to dig up roads without damaging the communication cables. The order gives instructions for the Government agencies and the telecommunication companies to exchange information on the work schedules.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS companies wanting to complete laying optical fibre cables have been asked to provide a detailed map of the cable network and a schedule of maintenance work to the officials concerned before they take up any work.

The Government departments have also been asked to grant permission on a priority basis to the companies to carry out maintenance and cable laying work.

According to a Government order, private communication companies had informed the Government that their cables have been cut and manholes disturbed during road digging by different agencies for road laying, water supply and drainage. This has affected communication and the quality of service provided. The last mile connectivity, linking consumers to the network, has to be taken up. Optical fibre cable laying work on main roads and highways has almost been completed. According to the order, the Government has laid down the procedures for cable laying and for other agencies to dig up roads without damaging the communication cables.

The order gives instructions for the Government agencies and the telecommunication companies to exchange information on the work schedules. Representatives from communication companies will be present, while agencies take up road digging, to ensure that cables are not damaged.

The companies will have to provide contact numbers in each district for the officials to inform them of maintenance works to be taken up by the Government departments. The companies will have to take up round-the-clock maintenance work and restore the road surface to its original condition. Heavy penalties have been provided in the case of delay in repairing the road surface.
