`Shift cargo terminal location': Kerala CM

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, has requested the Centre to review the decision for setting up the proposed cargo terminal at Mullakkal (Alappuzha district), which happens to be the finishing point for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a major tourist event.

The State Government, people's representatives from the area and the local residents shared the apprehension that the proposed terminal would hinder the smooth conduct of the boat race. The boat race has largely been instrumental in earning Alappuzha a place on the international tourism map. Any move that might hinder the smooth conduct of the annual event would adversely affect tourism prospects of the coastal district as a whole.

The Chief Minister said the existing approaches to Mullakkal were very narrow and congested, and did not lend themselves to widening or expansion work. In the circumstances, it would be advisable to consider other locations, such as nearby Pallathuruthy. Mr Antony requested the Union Minister for Shipping and Inland Navigation, Mr Shatrughan Sinha, to direct the Inland Water Authority of India to review the choice of the location for the cargo terminal.
