CII to train small units in tech upgradation

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Nov. 24

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII, Southern Region) would pay a special attention to small and medium enterprises to make them become globally competitive, Mr K.K.M. Kutty, Chairman, CII (SR), has said.

Stating that small enterprises played a crucial role in the country's industrial scenario, he has said that through a cluster approach, CII has planned to pick-up 15 small enterprises in Chennai and impart necessary training in technology upgradation, cost management, total quality management energy and waste management. CII would also train them in the core areas of marketing, finance and technology and enlighten them on competitiveness. These units are to be selected from the Ambattur Industrial Estate, he said at Tiruchi recently.

Speaking further, Mr Kutty has said that in the liberalised environment, the small enterprises needed to be competitive by focussing on the vital aspects of technology upgradation and quality products.

The large industries had the wherewithal to upgrade themselves quickly, while the smaller and medium ones did not command the resources to tackle the problem.

The training to be imparted would be at concessional prices. Based on the response the CII will be replicating the same project in Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin by working with 75 to 80 small enterprises. A similar `Cluster Project' carried out by the CII at Mohali in Punjab has evoked a good feedback, he mentioned.
