`Portal management looks promising again'

AFTER a brief lull portal management has re-emerged as a potential area of growth. The difference between then and now, however, is significant, says Mr T.N.C. Venkata Rangan, Chairman and Managing Director of Vishwak Solutions.The Chennai-based Vishwak Solutions is a top-tier solution provider in the .NET ecosystem.

Mr Venkata Rangan, who claims to be the chief architect of the ChennaiOnline portal said: "In the early days, the number of luncheon and dinner meetings that I attended were really sickening. The noise level was high, but nothing emerged eventually. But the focus is clear now. The companies that have survived the dotcom bust are making serious enquiries. An average CEO is more aware today of the alternative technologies . And industrywise too, there is a move towards open standards, but then, it is not going to happen overnight." Speaking to Business Line, he conceded that execution of projects was becoming a Herculean task as the process had become a lot more complex. "Customers' awareness is phenomenal and they are very demanding," he added.

Mr Venkata Rangan said that Vishwak Solutions, which was recording 100 per cent growth year-on-year, was targeting to clock revenues of Rs 15 crore by 2006, a five-fold increase in earnings from its present level.

The company had recently completed a portal on languages and bagged a contract with a Fortune 500 company for another major project. He was, however, reluctant to divulge more details, stating that the contract was yet to be signed.

The core focus of the seven-year old company, was on .NET technology, Mr Ventaka Rangan said. He added that the services offered included mobile application development, Web applications development, portal management and maintenance, outsourced IT Services and globalisation of Web pages.He said that Vishwak had undertaken a variety of projects in each of the specified areas for MSN as well as other clients. The company was today working closely with MSN units in Japan and India providing solutions to some of the extremely complex problems.

The company has a 60-member team at present, but is looking at hiring more people in the coming days.
