Kunhikrishnan wins award for `Narrowcasting'

New Delhi , Nov. 24

THE Deputy Director-General (DDG), Doordarshan, Mr K. Kunhikrishnan, has bagged a special award for `Exemplary Work on Narrowcasting' at the recently held annual DD Awards function. The award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs 25,000.

Mr Kunhikrishnan, who has been working in various departments of Doordarshan, was also the Director of the Thiruvananthapuram Kendra, where he worked on the project on narrowcasting, which was commissioned last year.

Narrowcasting, according to sources in Doordarshan, is a form of broadcasting using low power transmitters (LPTs) that terrestrially cover a 15-kilometre area. Doordarshan has started narrowcasting as a pilot project from select LPTs for a limited half-an-hour duration in a week. These programmes are produced either by the Programme Generating Facilities Kendra or the Regional Capital Doordarshan Kendras. The programmes are of local interest.

After the success of this project, the Agriculture Ministry has also sought permission from the Planning Commission for using narrowcasting for local agriculture programmes.
