Power AP: Energy efficiency project improves power supply Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Nov. 25 THE quality and reliability of power supply in Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda and Hyderabad districts of Andhra Pradesh have improved following the completion of the AP Energy Efficiency Project (APEEP). The project has demonstrated that technical losses in 33 KV and 11 KV network can be reduced by 40 to 60 per cent and the cost of energy saved is 30 to 50 per cent of the cost of new generation. The Department for International Development (DFID) of the UK, as a part of its energy sector reforms initiative, launched APEEP. It provided £42.7 million for the project but the actual cost incurred was £35.57 million. The main objective of the project was to improve the energy efficiency of the entire distribution network in the project areas and to provide a foundation for the State-wide application of the project's energy efficiency techniques. The DFID has appointed Power Consult of UK and the city-based Global Energy Consulting Engineers (GECE) as technical consultants for the project, which has been considered as a role model for replication all over India. According to the GECE Team Director, Dr M.V. Krishna Rao, the unique feature of the project is the creation of Centres of Excellence at each of the district headquarters by performing survey of network with the Global Positioning System, building up of a Geographic Information System, asset management and indexing of consumers. At a seminar organised by the Transmission Corporation of AP and DFID here on Tuesday, Dr Rao said that project had prepared "Least Cost Network Expansion Plan" for each of the four districts for a period of 10 years considering the load factors. Detailed load forecast mandal-wise was made considering the casual factors responsible for load growth and also influencing factors such as commercial losses and frequency improvement. The project recommended establishment of dedicated planning cells in the power utilities and systematic energy audit, accounting for network losses. The project also sought using of independent inspection agencies and execution of all major works under turnkey contract.
