Cashew Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Logistics - Shipping Cashew kernel export thru major ports drops A.J. Vinayak
Mangalore , Nov. 26 SOME of the Indian major ports are witnessing a decrease in the volume of cashew kernels exported. Cashew kernels are being exported to countries such as the US, the UK, the UAE, Spain, the Netherlands, and France from Kochi, Tuticorin, Mangalore, Visakhapatnam, and Goa ports. Except for Visakhapatnam port, all the other ports have registered a decline in the export of cashew kernels during April-June period this year compared with the corresponding period the previous year. According to the figures available in the latest issue of the Journal of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), the Indian ports exported 23,770 tonnes of kernels during April-June 2002 compared to 21,192 tonnes during the corresponding period this year. Though kernels worth Rs 443.29 crore were exported from these ports during April-June 2002, only Rs 392.25 crore worth kernels were exported in the corresponding period this year. The New Mangalore port exported 1,111 tonnes of cashew kernels worth Rs 22.05 crore during April-June 2003. The port is in the third position after the Kochi and Tuticorin ports. The Kochi port exported 13,279 tonnes kernels worth Rs 244.86 crore during the same period, where as the Tuticorin port came second with 6,176 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 112.88 crore. The Visakhapatnam port exported 519 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 9.94 crore and the Goa port exported 107 tonnes worth Rs 2.50 crore. Only the Visakhapatnam port recorded a growth in export during April-June 2003 compared to the corresponding period previous year. This port exported 414 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 8.16 crore during April-June 2002. During April-June 2002, the Kochi port exported 15,399 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 281.79 crore, the Tuticorin port 6,477 tonnes worth Rs 122.60 crore, the Mangalore port 1,353 tonnes worth Rs 27.68 crore, and the Goa port 127 tonnes worth Rs 3.03 crore. There is a slight increase in the export of kernels from the Tuticorin and the Goa ports during June this year considered to the corresponding period the previous year. The Tuticorin port, which exported 2,159 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 40.9 crore during June 2002, exported 2,422 tonnes worth Rs 43.38 crore during June this year. In June this year, the Goa port exported 74 tonnes of kernels (64 tonnes) worth Rs 1.75 crore (Rs 1.56 crore). Though the Kochi port topped the list in the export of cashew kernels, it was 774 tonnes less in June this year. In June 2002, it exported 5,060 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 96.62 crore. This June the port could export only 4,286 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 77.4 crore. The Mangalore port, which exported 584 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 12.38 crore in June 2002, could export only 411 tonnes of kernels worth Rs 8.19 crore this June.
