Rlys plans bridge under sea to link Rameswaram

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Nov. 26

THE Railway Board is considering construction of a bridge under sea to connect Rameswaram, according to the General Manager of Southern Railway, Mr V. Anand. He was in the city in connection with a safety meeting here.

He said the proposed bridge will be the first of its kind in the country and global tenders have been floated. Since it is difficult to construct a swing bridge, the suggestion to go under sea by creating a tunnel has been mooted to enable Coast Guard vessels to pass through.

He further said that the alternative of developing Mandapam as a major BG terminus and retaining the existing 2.15-km-long bridge on the meter gauge (across the sea) to Rameswaram is also under consideration.

He mentioned that the running time of trains between Nagercoil and Chennai Egmore will come down after the inauguration of the Chengalpattu-Tambaram double line. The Dindigul-Madurai-Manamadurai section will be closed for traffic in the next financial year to enable gauge conversion works. In order to ease congestion on the chord line between Madurai and Chennai (via Vridhachalam and Villupuram), efforts are on to get the Virudhunagar-Manamadurai conversion project as an alternative route, he said.
