Unilever chief sets store by direct marketing

Mumbai , Nov. 26

HINDUSTAN Lever Network, the direct selling arm of Hindustan Lever Ltd, expects to have 2.5 lakh direct sales consultants by year-end.

According to Mr Niall FitzGerald, Chairman of Unilever Plc, India is expected to become a major direct marketing centre of Unilever group in the near future. Mr FitzGerald told a gathering of over 1,500 HLL sales consultants here on Wednesday that ``in India, it is the beginning and we must develop it into the largest direct selling business in the world.''

``Consumer is your boss. He is the one who is actually owning your brands and your business and whatever you do has to be in the interest of the boss,'' the Unilever chief told the sales agents.

Citing the example of the group's other successful direct selling operations in Thailand and South Africa, the Chairman said, ``There will be challenges and one has to go through difficulties.''

Describing Unilever's operations across the world being that of a unique multi-local and multinational operation, Mr FitzGerald said two-thirds of households all over the world continued to use Unilever products.

The Unilever chief is in India to felicitate the network's successful partners with the venture set to break-even this year. ``You are the pioneers who have actually helped in creating our business model and now we have to go forward with speed,'' said Mr M.S. Banga, Chairman HLL.
