Ernakulam dist gets ready for biogas project

Our Bureau

Kochi , Nov. 27

ENTHUSED by the tremendous support received for the garbage disposal campaign, the Ernakulam panchayat authorities are planning to implement the biogas plant project across the district in a phased manner.

In the initial phase, around 285 houses were selected as beneficiaries for the project. Feasibility studies were completed where the plants are to be set up in the first phase. Efforts are on to complete the process in a week. The authorities have stressed the need to set up biogas plant in various parts of the district as part of its ongoing drive to transform the entire district into a garbage free zone.

The plant needs only one metre square pit and organic waste discharged from households. The bottom of the pit will be layered with 40 kg of cow dung and organic waste will be deposited on top of the cow dung.

The total outlay earmarked for the entire project in this fiscal year is Rs 10 lakh. It is estimated that each plant will cost Rs 7,000.
