'`Use fly ash, check greenhouse effect'

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 27

DID you know that each tonne of cement we produce generates one tonne of carbon dioxide? If the answer is `no', imagine the magnitude of damage considering the fact that we produce 100 million tonne of cement annually.

On another front, the country is piling up huge dumps of fly ash, a by-product from the combustion of pulverised coal in thermal power stations, posing a major threat to environment. It is estimated that about 160 million tonne of fly ash would be dumped in our backyards by 2013.

Heavy usage of fly ash in the construction industry can be a remedy — two birds in one shot.

With the developed countries planning severe restrictions and limitations on carbon dioxide, which is a major Greenhouse gas, a strong case is being built world over in favour of use of fly ash in the construction industry.
