Mumbai , Nov. 28 IN a bid to streamline the company's operational activities, GTL Ltd has set up an operating council to manage its expanding global business. Mr L.Y. Desai, Head of Capital Markets and Chief Investor Relations Officer, GTL Ltd, told Business Line that the operating council would comprise Mr Charudutt Nayak, President, Network Engineering and Enterprise Solutions business, Mr Aparup Sengupta, President, CMS/BPO (customer management solutions/ business process outsourcing) business, Mr Ravi Pandit, CFO and Mr Rahul Desai, Head-Risk Management. While the company's daily activities would be reviewed and monitored by the council, business concerned with investor relations, corporate treasury and capital markets would remain outside the purview of the council and the company's CMD, Mr Manoj Tirodkar, would be responsible for these activities, Mr Desai said. At the board of directors' meeting held here, the board has approved the expansion of GTL's CMS/BPO business, informed the company's notification to the Exchange. The new facility at Pune would handle back-office voice and non-voice business from existing and new clients based in the US and the UK. An investment of Rs 25 crore has been earmarked for the first phase of development of hardware, infrastructure, software and technology. Around 750 people are expected to be employed by the second quarter of 2004-05. The BPO business is expected to "show substantial growth over the next couple of months and some deals are likely to be closed by January next year. Going forward, we are looking at aligning the BPO business activities into a single entity," added Mr Desai. The CMS BPO business contributed Rs 109 crore to the total turnover of Rs 640 crore recorded by GTL last year. "In fact, the BPO business contributed much more since there are some BPO activities under the enterprise segment also," he said. Other plans include linking the Pune centre to GTL's existing facility at Navi Mumbai to enable the software firm provide data security and disaster recovery services. This would also allow GTL to offer high-end services such as business continuity, security support and network management. The GTL Board has also approved the merger and amalgamation of Thermax Systems & Software Ltd and Fine Infotech Ltd with the company. The process was initiated in April this year and legal formalities are expected to be completed by the year-end. According to the company's notice to the Exchange, the move would not have any impact on GTL's financial position.
