Over 100 varsities to take part in `Education Worldwide' expo

Bangalore , Nov. 28

IN February, over 100 universities across the world will participate in an education fair in Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi.

Apart from the educational institutions, other participants at the exhibition would be service providers in the area, such as banks that provide loans for higher education, insurance companies, moneychangers, visa consultants and local agents of foreign institutions.

Called `Education Worldwide,' the expo will be held at New Delhi between February 5 and 7, in Mumbai between February 10 and 12, and in Bangalore between February 14 and 16.

About 120 exhibitors in Delhi, 150 in Mumbai and 180 in Bangalore are taking up stalls at the fair. And the expo is expected to generate around 5,000 - 6,000 footfalls a day at each city.

According to Mr D.K. Jain, Director, Global Events and Expositions, which is organising the fair, "We want to make Indians aware that there are higher education opportunities in countries other than the US and the UK." New Zealand and Australia are opening up to Indian students and higher education there would cost about 60 per cent of what a course would cost in the US or the UK, he said. Moreover, education loans are easily available and there's no reason why Indians should not aspire for a foreign degree, he added.

Mr Jain said that several countries have set up local agencies here to lure Indian students. Among them are Australia (IDP), Canada (CEC), UK (British Council), New Zealand (IEEN), US (USEFI), Germany (DADS) and Korea (NIID). "It's obvious that they are serious about taking our students there. They have even relaxed the visa norms for us," he said.

Every year, about one lakh Indian students go abroad for higher education: about 70,000 to the US, 15,000 to Europe, 3,000 to Australia and 1,000 to New Zealand.
