Cryo engine for GSLV satellite clears final test

Bangalore , Dec. 6

THE indigenous cryogenic engine for the GSLV satellite launcher has passed its final qualification test.

On Friday, the cryo engine successfully completed a 1,000-second endurance test. In actual flight, it is required to burn for 720 seconds, ISRO said.

"This is the final test as far as the engine is concerned. Once the entire cryo stage system is ready, there may be a total integrated test," a spokesman said.

The cryo engine is the heart of the cryo stage system that is being developed by ISRO to replace the Russian stage in the GSLV two-tonne class satellite launcher. That development will make the nation's geosynchronous satellite launcher programme for two-tonne satellites fully independent.

The latest long-duration test was conducted at the Mahendragiri facility of ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. The engine has so far been tested for a cumulative duration of 6,000 seconds in three hardware, ISRO said in a release. A number of specially established facilities like assembly and integration facility, test stand and control centre have been used for the assembly and testing of engines.

The Thiruvananthapuram centre is developing the indigenous cryogenic stage system for the GSLV, which has already completed two trial flights with Russian stages.
