Grid collapse affects Maharashtra, Gujarat

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Dec. 6

ALMOST entire Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat witnessed a blackout after the trunk 400-KV western grid lines transmitting power to the two States tripped at 12.21 p.m. on Saturday.

At the same time, the Talcher-Kolar high voltage direct current link carrying 1,050-MW power and the 500-MW unit Talcher stage II also tripped, affecting power supply in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh, officials of the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) said. Most of the western grid was revived by late afternoon.

The Indore-Asoj and Itarsi-Dhule 400-KV lines may have tripped because of low voltage at the Indore sub-station and line overloading. This resulted in the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) and the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) systems separating from the grid.

Around 5,200-MW generation was lost. Of this, the MSEB system lost 3,500 MW, while 1,000 MW was lost in the GEB systems and 700 MW in the Central sector stations. Power frequency in the Central grid that includes the northeast, eastern and western regions had seen a frequency rise of 0.6 hertz above the normal 48-49 Hz.

Similar such power outages had affected Maharashtra earlier on November 5 and 7 and even on October 6.

Officials of the MSEB said the grid failure caused Bhusawal, Parali, Nasik, Uran and Koyna power stations to collapse. Except parts of Vidarbha and Mumbai, most major cities in Maharashtra including Thane, Pune, Kolhapur and Sangli were affected.

Parts of Mumbai also suffered after one unit of BSES's Dahanu unit tripped because of the load. The other unit was already shut down for annual maintenance. Greater Mumbai remained mostly unaffected because of the islanding system.

PGCIL is investigating the cause for trippings.
