CBI official held on graft charges

MR A. Sudhakara Rao, a Deputy Inspector-General of Police of the CBI, was arrested here on Saturday on a charge of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.

A team of officials from New Delhi detained the DIG. According to Mr Sudhir Pratap Singh, the CBI DIG, who led the operation in response to complaints received against the official, the team had earlier arrived here on Friday.

Two persons were caught on Saturday morning while accepting a sum of Rs 5 lakh on behalf of the accused official, Mr Singh said. Searches were conducted by the CBI team and Rs 7.4 lakh in cash, jewellery, bonds and deposit documents recovered from the house of the official, he said.

Mr Sudharkara Rao, an IPS officer of the 1989 batch, was on deputation to the CBI office here from 1996. He had been repatriated to Sikkim and posted at Gangtok as the DIG of armed battalion recently. He got his relieving orders here only on Wednesday and was to join duty in Sikkim.
