THE Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Thiruvananthapuram, will host the annual convention of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS) from December 9 to12.
Announcing this at a press conference in the city, Dr George Joseph, President, ISRS, said the four-day event would discuss the theme `Resource management with special reference to geoinformatics and decentralised planning'.
Though this is the first time the annual convention of ISRS is being organised in Kerala, the State's association with remote sensing is quite old, said Dr M. Baba, Director-CESS and Chairman of the Thiruvananthapuram Chapter of the society.
As early as the 1980s, the State has been the site of a remote sensing project aimed at assessing the extent of Kerala's forest cover, he pointed out. More recent projects include an initiative targeted at mapping the resources of the State's panchayats, he added.
Addressing the press conference Dr R.R. Navalgund, Director, National Remote Sensing Agency, said the science of remote sensing offers several advantages to the people of the country.
Various projects in this area are adding to the knowledge base on the resources available across India, he added.
