KOCHI: The Regional Office of the Rural Community Development Society (RCDS), an NGO working for the uplift of tribals was inaugurated here on Sunday.
The society has been concentrating on the rehabilitation of unwed tribal mothers, freeing of tribal children from child labour, their rehabilitation, education and health awareness programmes.
The society plans to market the forest produce collected by the tribals from Wayanad in the first phase. The forest produce of tribals from other parts of the State will also be marketed by the Society at a later stage.
In the first phase, the society plans to rehabilitate 50 unwed tribal mothers by providing them permanent employment, Mr Rajendra Prasad, RCDS President said. The forest produce collected from 3,000 acres of land owned by Attapadi Co-operative Farming Society will be processed and packed by these women.
The Sikkim Time Co-operative Ltd (Sitco), owned by the Sikkim Government, will also co-operate with the Society for providing employment opportunities to the tribals.
