Mangalore to host honey fest from Dec 12

THE South Canara Bee-keepers' Co-operative Society, Puttur, in association with Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and the United Nation's Development Programme, will hold a three-day "Honey Festival-2003" in Mangalore from December 12.

The member of KVIC, Mr S. Rajagopal, will inaugurate the festival. The President of the Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB), Bangalore, Mr Sriranga Devarayalu, will inaugurate the exhibition stalls on the occasion. The President of Campco, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, will release the special edition of the apiculture quarterly magazine, "Madhu Prapancha".

As part of the festival, a workshop on "Bee-keeping" will be held in Mangalore on December 13. The officials of KVIC and apiculturists will interact with farmers and guide them about apiculture.

According to an estimate, 6,415 farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts produce nearly 30,000 kg of honey from 11,730 bee colonies.

The South Canara Bee-Keepers' Cooperative Society, which has been procuring honey from farmers, is marketing it under the brand name, "Madhuri".
