INDIA and Sri Lanka have planned to undertake joint cruises for the exploration of marine geological sources and work towards building a strong co-operation on ocean related information systems.
`Samudra Saudhakam', the scientific study vessel of the Geological Survey of India, would be reaching Sri Lanka next week on a `goodwill mission' where some Sri Lankan scientists would join, according to Mr Razik Zarook, Chairman of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, Colombo.
At least two joint cruises, the first such exercises between the two countries will follow this mission. The Indian expertise would be utilised by the Sri Lankan scientists during the exercises. Areas like marine resources, aquatic life, and other economically beneficial areas which need scientific studies would be the focus of the co-operative effort, he told Business Line here.
Mr Zarook, who is here participating in an international workshop organised by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, said an Indian delegation was also expected to go to Sri Lanka to discuss several issues related to ocean development, including the continental shelf.
The Secretary of the Union Department of Ocean Development, Mr Harsh K. Gupta, said an Indo-Sri Lanka joint project for studying storm surges, which would help in forecast of storm was being undertaken. A series of data buoys at identified positions in the Indian Ocean along the two countries would be deployed. The DoD has developed a model for studying storm surges, which could be used for the purpose.
