Announcements Marketing - New Products & Services Industry & Economy - Environment Environment-friendly paper from ITC Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 8 ITC Ltd has commenced commercial production of paper using the environment-friendly ECF (elemental chlorine-free) technology at its Bhadrachalam unit in Andhra Pradesh. The company's Paperboards and Speciality Papers Division hopes to sell 1,00,000 tonnes of ECF paper to packaging companies annually and claims to be ahead of its rivals in introducing the product. "The total market is about 5,00,000 tonnes, and we will try to educate our customers on the benefits of using ECF paper. With growing awareness among the end-customers about contamination in food products, we believe that the ECF paper has a readymade market," the Division's Chief Executive, Mr Pradeep Dhobale, told presspersons here. Mr Dhobale said that the technology does not use chlorine gas in the bleaching process and the entire process, including the final product, is environment friendly. The Government is set to lay down more stringent norms for paper manufacturers. All producers have to upgrade their technology to reduce the damage to environment in the next five years, he said, adding, "We have at least a three year headstart over the rivals." "The company has invested Rs 230 crore for the upgradation but we will not pass on the burden to our customers. Although the price of ECF paper will go up marginally on account of the higher input costs, our prices will be very competitive," Mr Dhobale said. ITC will also invest Rs 260 crore at the Coimbatore unit acquired recently from Ballarpur Industries Ltd (BILT). The investments will help the company increase production capacity by 65,000 tonnes per annum, taking its total installed capacity to 3,50,000 tonnes per annum, he said.
