Fire fighting tugs for Jeddah port — Cochin Shipyard starts fabrication

Kochi , Dec. 8

COCHIN Shipyard Ltd has commenced the fabrication of third and fourth tugs under its recent order for building nine tugs for the Port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The contract for construction of nine fire fighting tugs for the Jeddah Port was singed on June 7 this year and the order was placed by A.A.Turki Corporation, Saudi Arabia.

A press release issued here said that this is the second export order won by CSL against very stiff international competition from yards of Singapore, China and other countries. Attractive price and delivery schedule quoted by the yard were the decisive factors in clinching the deal.

Out of the nine tugs for the Jeddah port, the construction of the first and second tugs is progressing on schedule.

The complete design of the ships is being undertaken in CSL. These crafts are highly manoeuvrable for various harbour operations.

In addition to fire fighting, they are also equipped to combat pollution such as oil spills in harbour and other exigencies.

These fully air-conditioned ships can accommodate up to 9 persons on board and conform to the most stringent conditions of operation in West Asia.

According to the press release, finalisation of this contract is a tremendous boost to CSL's drive to go global and secure orders from foreign owners.

CSL has intensified its marketing in West Asia and some sections of the European market in the last couple of years.

These efforts bore fruit when CSL could win its first export order in February last year for an ocean going launch platform for NPCC, Abu Dhabi, which was delivered within the contractual delivery schedule..
