Climate & Weather Dry weather prevails over Kerala Our Bureau
WITH the northeast monsoon running into the last few weeks of the 2003 season, largely dry weather prevailed all over the State during the four days ending December 7, the Agromet Advisory dated December 8 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, said. No single episode of rain of any consequence was reported from anywhere during the four days under reference, the advisory added. Mean minimum temperature varied between 21 deg C and 23 deg C in various districts. Kannur recorded the lowest minimum of 19.6 deg C on December 7. The minimum temperature was three degrees below normal in Alappuzha on the December 6 and in Thiruvananthapuram on December 7. Mean relative humidity varied between 53 per cent and 79 per cent, mean cloud coverage between 1 okta and 5 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 10 kmph. Forecast valid until Dec. 10 is mainly dry weather for all districts. No significant change in outlook was indicated for the next two days. State and stage of crops: Mundakan paddy crop was in the panicle initiation stage. Coconut, arecanut, pepper and cashew saw intercultural operations, mulching and plant protection measures being implemented apace. Pepper was in the harvesting stage. Tapping operations were progressing in rubber. Fruit trees had bloomed while vegetables saw intercultural operations, top dressing, plant protection and harvesting gather momentum. Advisory for next 3 days: Paddy fields should be watched for pests such as stem borers and leaf rollers. Spraying with Phosphamidon at 0.5 ml/litre of water has been advised for controlling the pests. In coconuts, intercultural digging operations can be undertaken to conserve soil moisture. In cashew, spraying may be undertaken to synchronise with flowering, but only in consultation with the local Krishi Bhavan, to keep tea mosquitoes at bay. Second top dressing may be resorted persisted with almost the entire range of crops.
