BEL gesture to promote 'Kuchipudi'

Bangalore , Dec. 9

ARTS and defence electronics may be worlds apart but Bharat Electronics is trying to say it can appreciate and serve an ancient national dance form.

In the run-up to its golden jubilee next year, the public sector major is donating Rs 10 lakh for promoting Kuchipudi dance. The money will go to Sri Siddhendra Kalakshetram at Kuchipudi village for renovating a 50-year-old main building used for practice sessions.

The village is situated very close to BEL's Machilipatnam unit in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, according to a BEL release. The dance school is named after the 15th century ascetic, Siddhendra Yogi, who codified and enriched the art form, and is affiliated to the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University. A 22-member troupe from the school acknowledged the gift with a performance in Bangalore today.

BEL said that during 2003-04, it would be taking up several other special projects with a social, cultural or humanitarian cause.
