Bangalore , Dec. 9

"BANGALORE has a good mix of traditional and contemporary shoppers and has been a good market for us," says Mr V. Shiv Kumar, Country Manager, Consumer Goods Business, Swarovski India Pvt Ltd. He was here to launch Crystal Belly Jewel, the belly crystal collection from Swarovski.

Traditional Bangalore customers for Swarovski mainly comprised coffee estate owners from Coorg. But now with salaries in the software sector booming, Swarovski has seen a `considerably big offtake' from young corporate executives. "They are Western-oriented because they are well travelled and exposed to the Western culture already. They probably realise the value of collecting crystalware," says Mr Shiv Kumar.

Added to this is a huge floating population in the city, thanks to the growth of the IT industry. "And this is the ideal kind of shopper for us." According to Mr Shiv Kumar, international products such as Swarovski are impulse purchases, which these visitors to the city would like to take home. Speaking of Bangalore's strategic position in south India, he says it acts as a gateway to any international product entering the South Indian market. "In its shopping habits, it is similar to Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong," says Mr Shiv Kumar.

Though Bangalore stands fourth in sales of Swarovski products after Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, Mr Shiv Kumar expects the city to take the third position soon.

At the Swarovski Festival held last week in the city, there was a special preview of the Crystal Paradise Collection. Comprising insects, butterflies and birds, the collection has got a lot of enquiries from Bangalore, says Mr Shiv Kumar.
