European Gemological starts Indian operations

Mumbai , Dec. 9

EUROPEAN Gemological Laboratory (EGL) on Tuesday launched its Indian operations, by taking over the Indian operations of the International Gemological Laboratories (IGL).

EGL, the world's largest independent network of gemological laboratories, has 10 centres in Belgium, South Africa, the US, Israel, the UK, Turkey, France and South Korea.

"In India, EGL will be investing about Rs 10 crore to Rs 15 crore in developing centres, in nine major metros over the next 6 to 8 months, including Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai. EGL has started its operation in Mumbai. The next immediate target is to open office in Delhi around January 2004, by opening a gemological school and a collection centre," Mr Pritesh Jhaveri, head of India Operations (EGL), told Business Line.

About service charges on diamond certification, Mr Jhaveri said: "We will charge on the basis of weightage and caratage of diamond and diamond jewellery to our customers."

"Our target audience is traders, manufacturers, exporters, banks, auctioneers, insurance companies and professional individuals," he said in a conference.

Mr Jhaveri, who has done graduation in Gemology from GIA (America), is a reputed expert in diamond certification in the Indian diamond industry. He started IGL few years back and was the first diamond grading and certification laboratory in the country.

EGL is set to provide world-class services to the domestic diamond industry in the major areas such as consultation of diamond, certification of diamond, laser inscription, sealing of stones, teaching of diamond grading and Champagne Diamond report.

EGL India is also launching the EGL College of Gemology; a centre for imparting internationally-accredited diploma courses in Diamond Grading and Certification. These courses are targeted towards the diamond trading and individual students, who want to become professionals in the international diamond industry.
