Spices & Condiments Another spices exporter's registration suspended G.K. Nair
Kochi , Dec. 9 THE Spices Board has suspended the spices export registration certificate of M/s S G Spice and Seed Trading Company Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, for allegedly shipping spices of a banned company. The Mumbai firm was found out to be an establishment set up by the management of a banned company, Gautham Exports Corporation, that had been banned after its chilli consignments were detected having prohibited colourants Mr S. Kannan, Director, Marketing, Spices Board, told Business Line on Tuesday. The decision was taken after detailed investigation of the company's operations. He said the customs authorities had been informed of the suspension. The certificate of registration of four exporters and one processor exporter were suspended earlier following detection of prohibited carcinogenic dye Sudan-1 in some consignments of chilli powder exported from the country, he said. He said to curb export of contaminated chilli powder from the country, the Spices Board had directed the exporters to provide details of their export consignment and samples to the Board or any of its office for laboratory testing and clearance. The European Union has stipulated that each consignment of hot chilli and chilli products imported into EU must accompany an analytical report demonstrating that the chilli products do not contain Sudan-1. Besides, the European Spice Trade Association has asked the Spices Board to indicate as to what steps are being taken to ensure a higher degree of reliability and safety to spice products exported from India, Mr Kannan said. The authorities in the US and Europe are strict about the presence of aflotoxin in the chillies. The tolerance limit for chillies fixed by the European Union is 10 ppb while it is 15 ppb in the US, he said, adding that samples would now have to be tested for aflotoxin presence. High Courts uphold suspension: Meanwhile, a division Bench of the Kerala High Court, on an appeal by the Spices Board against a single Bench order, has set aside the order of a single bench staying the suspension of export registration of two firms. It has ordered that "so long as the registration certificate of the exporter issued under the provision of the Spices Board Act stands suspended, the exporter is not entitled to export spices and hence stayed the order of November 4 until further orders". The single Bench, on a petition filed by M/s Nishant Export and M/s Jamnadas Madhavji International Ltd, against suspension of their export registration by the Spices Board, had the Board to allow exports of pending stocks of imported pepper under conditions as may be imposed by it. The Board had gone for appeal against the order of the Court contending that "there is no provision in the act to adopt such a procedure". The Spices Board suspended the certificate of registration as these two companies were found to be exporting imported pepper as Indian pepper by giving false declarations, Mr Kannan said.
