Aircel to spend $40 m on capacity expansion

R.Y. Narayanan

Coimbatore , Dec. 9

AIRCEL Ltd is in the midst of major capacity expansion involving a total outlay of about $40 million for import of equipment and creation of the infrastructure needed, according to Mr K.V.P. Baskar, Director and CEO, Aircel Ltd.

The company is one of the cellular phone service providers in Tamil Nadu

The Aircel CEO, was talking to the media on the occasion of the launch of co-branded credit card by Aircel and ICICI Bank here.

The work had already commenced and its impact was being felt by the subscribers, he added.

Aircel had brought under its network already 167 towns in the State and another 125 towns were being added to the network, he said.

According to him, additional base stations were being established in the existing towns to improve coverage quality. The capacity expansion envisaged would cater to a subscriber base of 8.5 lakh, he added.

The Aircel CEO pointed out that there had been persistent speculation in the past that Aircel was on the block.

The company with its `no-strings attached attitude' has been able to increase customer loyalty.

He said Aircel was doing `much better' than competition in this mobile telephony business. Hence, if any acquisition occurred, it would benefit both the company and the subscribers.

He made these remarks while responding to media queries on speculation that the company was on the prowl to acquire stake in RPG Cellular, a mobile telephone company with licence to operate in Chennai city (which is a separate circle) where Aircel is not a licence holder.
