Airlines Cabinet nod likely for intl flights by private airlines Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 9 THE ambition of private sector scheduled airlines to take to the international skies could get a step closer towards being achieved on Wednesday. Sources told Business Line that the Union Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet tomorrow, is expected to clear a proposal to allow private sector scheduled airlines to fly to the neighbouring countries in the seven-member South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC). In October this year, the joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister's visit to India stated that Indian private sector scheduled airlines will be encouraged to fly to airports in Sri Lanka. However, the implementation of the proposal requires amendments to the Air Services Agreement (ASA), which will pave the way for scheduled private sector scheduled airlines to fly abroad. Besides, the Cabinet is also expected to allow the designated airlines of three countries of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) including Laos and Myanmar to pick up passengers from an intermediate point in the region before flying to India. At the ASEAN summit in Bali in October this year, the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, announced an open sky policy for the designated airlines of the regional grouping. The airlines were permitted to operate daily services to the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata apart from operating charters to 18 tourist destinations in India.
